My Village...
As we started this year here at ROotie StudiO, my girls decided that it would be fun to do a on going project throughout the year. We thought about several different things and then came up with a journal type project that included embroidery and applique.

After rolling this project and our group around in my head, I came up with the theme of My Village. I thought that fit this group wonderfully!

Here is our line up of My Village for the year:
My House
House of Heart
Flower Shoppe
Fruit & Vegetable Shoppe
Candy Shoppe
Favorite Number House
Sewing Shoppe
Bakery Shoppe
Birdie in the Garden
Song Shoppe
Box that will house My Village

I thought about the shape of our monthly endeavor...and then came up with a house shape.

I asked each student to pick out one fabric from which to create their village from...using those colors as the palette for the year. The front of these pieces will be designed using the theme of the month and the back will be a coordinating fabric that we can choose to write something on. In the end they will stand in an accordion style and we will create a box for them to nestle into!

We will use cottons, felt, velvets highlighted with ribbons and ric rac.

Center is my theme fabric
Fabric to the right with printing is my backing fabric

Each month we will cover a matte board shape, pad it, and  add a fabric overlay. We will applique certain hand-made items on to it and finish it off with different embroidery stitches.

 January- My House

February- House of Heart

and the year will go on with more to come....

Class Dolls at ROotie:

This sweet folk art style piece was originally going to be in doll form…but as we all know, things change and we (as in “we”- the ROotie group-)  decided that it could be so much more fun as a hand puppet!
One of my students, Julie and I were talking about this project and here is her quick drawing of what we were discussing...

Julie's drawing to this adaption

And so..here she is Hunny Bunny- named for the Honey-color dying technique included in the pattern…

Wool felt with silk velvet and cotton

More Bunnies- you know what they say about rabbits...

Other Happenings:
Pincushions- For February ROotie did Love Bird Pincushions...luckily or maybe not for some...they never made it onto the web- they sold right from ROotie!

Be content with what you have,
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.
